For decades, Pakistan’s Hindu community suffered endless atrocities at the hands of Islamists, for their Hindu faith. Their minor girls ‘disappeared’ overnight, coercively converted and married to Islamists twice their age. Temples that once echoed with bhajans now lay in ruins, converted to public toilets, madrassas, meat shops or residences.
Each shelter gave back something precious — a wall of dignity, a door of hope and a clutch of safety.
For Pakistani Hindus, the journey to Bharat was not mere migration — it was escape to safety. They sold off their ornaments, borrowed from neighbors and boarded overcrowded trucks to cross the border. When they arrived, their relief met the harsh reality of refugee life — no roofs, no privacy, no safety in scorching summers, chilly winters and uncertain monsoons. Mothers wept quietly, clutching daughters who had seen too much too young.
